John Trice [1953 - 1999]

A Memorial Kissing Gate and a second gate has erected on Ranmoor Common National Trust land (unmarked) located at Grid Ref:  TQ140503

John Trice Chaired the Kingston Ramblers for much of the 1990s succeeding Daphne Windle and also held a role as Holiday Programme Organiser.  John was a popular member of Kingston Ramblers but sadly suffered from a lot of ill health particularly arthritis which made climbing stiles and walking progressively more difficult for him. Despite this he led many long walks and expeditions at weekends and over New Year to the West Country and Wales.  It is recorded that he last led a walk in September 1998 from Selbourne.  His early death at the age of only 46 in 1999 followed hospitalisation relating to his arthritis resulting in an infection of MRSA.  

At the dedication of the gate that was erected following donations by Kingston Rambler's members in his memory, John Summerfield comments on his patience and endurance during his long illness, his love of walking and holidays worldwide, and for the wonderful photographs he took.  He had a great interest in other people and a very dry sense of humour!  The article about the dedication of the memorial gate that appeared in the group programme in November 2001 appears below.

The gates to commerate John are on the North Downs Way, on the edge of Steer's Feld, Ranmore Common.  The gate is a large gate used for disabled access and because this is on National Trust land, the gate is unmarked and a record in memorium to John is recorded in the Box Hill Centre of the National Trust.
