Surrey Leadership Courses for 2019

Every year, Surrey Area and two or three groups organise walk leader training courses which are open to all Surrey members.

A typical course comprises a morning session on leadership, walk planning, map reading and, basic compass work, and an introduction to computer mapping and smart phone navigation apps, followed by an afternoon outdoor practical session.

Use of map and compass remains the core of the course, but more time is now given to digital mapping. This session covers the pros and cons of digital mapping aids, with particular reference to the two most widely used systems: Viewranger and OS maps.

The courses are open to any Surrey Ramblers members with the aim of encouraging new walk leaders, and therefore more walks. There is however no obligation to attend a course before you start leading; or there may be schemes within your own local groups that support you in leading.

Our aim is to foster confidence in those who are new to leading, or wish to learn more about navigation. The day also covers ways to go about planning a walk, and provides the chance to exchange ideas with walkers from across the area.

The final course for 2018 took place on a lovely autumn day at Hale in Farnham. Fifteen ramblers from various Surrey groups joined in with the course, ably led by Sue, Alan & Gerald. Thanks go to the organisers. Attendees learnt about the meaning of OS map symbols, grid references, orienteering and how to take a compass bearing.
