The Future of Kingston Ramblers

Kingston Ramblers is a club with its walk leadership, programme compilation and administration provided by the members, that is us. Over the last few years several long serving committee members have resigned and replacements have not been found. It is always a struggle to fill the programme with the number of available leaders. Members of the committee are filling multiple roles to keep the show on the road. In time existing committee members will give up their positions and unless a stream of ‘new management’ is found there will be no long term future for Kingston Ramblers.

We urgently need one and preferably two committee members to help with programme compiling. A competence with Excel, email  and organisational ability are the prime skills required. Provided we obtain enough volunteers they would only have to work on one programme each year. We also need someone to assist with publicity and recruitment. The work is not onerous. Apart from the weeks when a programme is being finalised it is only a few hours a month.

We always need more walk leaders to help us fill a varied programme. Now that we have an option for a shorter walks programme, members can ‘practice’ leading. Our existing leaders are more than willing to mentor new leaders and a free one day training course is run twice a year by Surrey Area of the Ramblers.

If you can help maintain and even expand the activities of the Kingston group please speak to one of the committee.

John Hauxwell Memorial Gate

The Committee has agreed a location for John’s gate with Surrey County Council. It will be installed in Ockham Lane at GR TQ083571. Date of installation to be agreed.

We have received enough money for a second gate; therefore, it has been decided to erect a memorial to Len Hands who many of you will remember as a past Chairman of The Group. This will be installed in Glazers Lane, Normandy at SU931508

Transport

A major upgrade to Waterloo station is to take place between 5th and 28th August. There will be a substantial curtailment in rail services on SOUTH WEST train lines during this period. For details and links to train operator’s web site see our web site.

There is a lot of general upgrade work being carried out on rail and tube lines at weekends as well as revised timetables – please check for changed schedules and replacement bus services.

Walk Leadership

For those who want to take up leading walks or even thinking about it a one day training course is run by the Surrey Area of the Ramblers. The course covers basic map reading and walk leading, is free and takes place on Saturdays - the next date is 14 October.

If you want to lead a walk and require advice and assistance, experienced leaders are available to assist you. Contact David Cooper for more information.

Social Event

Another social evening will be held over the summer – suggestions for a venue would be appreciated. Contact Maureen Munday
